Marin County is a place where visitors can step into living history and spark their imaginations—all in one trip. Here, the stories of the Coast Miwok people, who cared for this land for hundreds of years, connect with landscapes that later inspired filmmakers like George Lucas. The result is a friendly mix of culture, history, nature, and a touch of movie magic.

Tomales Bay State Park – Indian Beach

When visiting Indian Beach, walk a shoreline once home to Coast Miwok communities. For generations, families gathered shellfish here, and the remains of their ancient shell middens are still visible today. Standing at the water’s edge, viewing a few replicas of Miwok Kochas stands, it’s easy to imagine tule canoes gliding across the bay. To get here, follow the park’s interpretive trail signs.

Olompali State Historic Park

Once the site of the region’s largest Coast Miwok villages, Olompali is a destination where one can learn about the traditional lifestyles of the Miwok Indians. The name Olompali means “southern village” in the Miwok language, reminding visitors of its roots. Trails take you past Miwok heritage sites, adobe structures from the Rancho era, and gardens linked to later communities. Enjoy the 2.5-mile Miwok Loop Trail, which offers a more challenging hike on the lower slopes of Mt. Burdell.

Imagination Park – San Anselmo

Marin’s stories aren’t just historical—they’re imaginative, too. In San Anselmo, Imagination Park celebrates the creative spirit of George Lucas, who once called Marin home. Visit the bronze statues of Yoda and Indiana Jones, perfect for photos and a playful intermission between adventures.

Roy’s Redwoods Preserve

For some movie-inspired wonder, step into Roy’s Redwoods, where the trees are said to have inspired the Ewok (sounds like Miwok?) villages in Return of the Jedi. The newly refurbished trails are playful, and the redwoods invite all ages to express their love of adventure and nature while picnicking in an area that feels almost otherworldly.
